Audicity is a freeware music program I downloaded., I'm using an iBook G4, OSX of course. I can't figure out how to get the built-in mic to work. There's a chance the mic on this computer is busted actually.

    Does anyone know:

    (1) how to test the built in mic on an iBook?

    (2) What kind of USB mic might work? Which will probably be a better mic anyway, am I looking at $10 or $100 or what?

    system preferences, from the dock.
    sound.
    input tab.
make sure internal microphone is selected for sound input.
    talk.
    meter should move.

depending on your use, i wouldn't suggest usb mics. they don't tend to be that great.

a good quality setup could be a little more complicated.

i've used audacity myself, and love the program.

I've done those steps .... I dunno .... no workee

I've been doing some digging around online and the mic cable inside the lid may be pinched etc. Lots of nonworking g4 mics out there.

So .... I dunno, cheap (and cheap-sounding but will work) may be a USB mic?

My piano prodigy nephew recommended a Shure SM57 mic and an interface box and cable from Sweetwater.com to solve this very problem. I have Audacity on a 2002 (dome + screen) iMac running OS 10.4.
