Manny, I was wondering how you handle the solo part from the bass aria in the Christmas Oratorio. The range obviously goes below the piccolo in "A" range. Do you use the piccolo and take that brief part up an octave or do you use a different instrument? My options at this point are limited since I do not own a "D" trumpet that I am comfortable with but I am curious as to how you would play it. Thanks in advance!.

When I first started out n this business, Vacchiano told me the the Eb trumpet would be a great crossover instrument and that aria was one place I used it. I also used it to play the Messiah for the first 8 years of my life in orchestra. So, you can try the Eb or simply put the notes in a different octave. You can play a few measures on the Eb and pick up the piccolo. Lots of options are available. Last year, Chuck got sick and I had to read a show for him on a free lance gig and I played it up the octave. No big deal to do that. You just do what's convenient for now.
