"Interesting... so you're in Ireland?"
Nope, guess again...
Keep waiting for the answer you wanted to begin with, but that doesn't mean it will be the right thing to do. This is a question that never should have been asked in the first place, in my opinion. You know what the right thing to do is already.
Where I live, there are no gigs.
There is no way I can convey to you in this forum what a huge mistake backing out of the original gig would be. Do yourself a real favor and play the original gig.
In Nashville, people sub out gigs all the time. Here, it doesn't seem to be a big deal as long as you clear it with the person booking the first job and be sure to send a sub who will do a very good job.
Sure, "I won't be able to make it- do you mind if Wynton sits in for me instead"?
So the OP knows the answer - he's just hoping that you will confirm what his gut (and his parents) tells him is right. One rarely asks this type of question if they have not already sorted the answer - even if it's subconsciously. Doing the right thing is the only option - first gig - laid down Mizzare.
Funny, then what do you do with: Selmer Radial Bb (1970)
Bill Pfund Custom Bb (2013)
Bach "Chicago" C (2008)
Thomas C (1990?)
Vintage 'Lefever' Cornet (1900)
Schilke Eb Cornet (on loan) (2006)
VMI Rotary Bb (2007?)
Scherzer 8111 Bb/A Piccolo (?)
Trumpet: Parke "Merkelo", Pro Brass 5C
Piccolo: Pro Brass 5C
Cornet: Denis Wick 4
Sop. Cornet: Schilke 11A4?
......................and where do you live, on a houseboat in the middle of a lake, or in a cave, or converted missle silo?
I'll vote missile silo...
Don't back out of the 1st gig! There, said it.
