High A above the staff is not bad for a 10th grader, my range is high C and I play lead in senior jazz band fine.

    Trumpetmom,

I have a mouthpiece you can have that may help. My son used it when he first got braces and it worked miracles. He immediately had better range and endurance than he did without the braces. He actually hit a high C the first time he tried it and he was never able to do that even before the braces.

It is a very good quality and good sounding mouthpiece. It was made by Greg Black and was designed by Greg Black and Rich Szabo. It has a larger cup (almost as big as a 3C) and a wide rim which will help with some of the discomfort of the braces.

If you want it, you can have it, just pay me back for the shipping. Details of the mouthpiece can be found here (scroll down to the bottom of the page -- BP mouthpiece):

Braces is no reason to switch from trumpet. It is possible to play trumpet with braces. Let him choose.
