Just did a ping test of two trumpet bells, one gold brass (lightweight), and one standard weight yellow brass bell.

The gold bell rang a D and the yellow bell rang an Eb. Is this typical for the different compositions?

I know this is not a genuine apples to apples comparison, but was curious how material would effect the tone.

Is there any difference on the diameter of the bells?

Both bells are exactly the same size.

    Pointless in my opinion.

Perhaps in your opinion, but at least one respected website...one of the "loyalist" sites, devoted a fair amount of effort in recording pings and posting results for different manufacturers.

I'm not saying it's a big deal, just trying to understand more about trumpets.

What does this tell you about a horn?

I'm not sure. But there are those who claim it is significant.
And this is why the question was posed. After visiting the other website, my curiosity was elevated and I knew the members here would have legitimate opinions on the issue.

As I'm ordering a new horn in the near future, I want to learn as much as I can concerning trumpet construction and playing qualities.

The bell of a trumpet does not function as a handbell.

What it does when you rap it means nothing.

I always noticed that higher quality trumpets do ping and lower ones dont... My friends TR300 makes a thump when you hit it...
