I'm starting to get black spots on the bell of my silver trumpet and I don't know why. I keep my trumpet in an anti tarnish bag and the spots wouldn't come off with silver polish cloth, so I do not think it is tarnish. Any idea what is happening?

I think its tarnish. Try a tin foil bath or some silver polish.

Can you pick it off with your fingernail?

did your bell ever come in contact with rubber?? rubber has sulpher in it and it will turn silver black. I used an early Hamilton stand which had a rubber ring the bell rested on. I had a perfect black circle on a beautiful Shilke S32 that wouldn't come completely off. A tech buffed it for me but you could still see the outline. it didn't happen right away but over time the black circle appeared and would not vanish. you may have a slight flaw in the plating that is just now showing up. warranty probably won't cover it.

Has someone been with your trumpet and a magnifying glass without you? This is kinda weird. I have had some blackish spots but they came off with a bath or some dirt that I could pick off.

If it is tarnish a dab of silver polish and cloth will remove it. Let it sit for a 5-10 mins. I can't imagine it being anything else.

Not even the tip to a trumpet stand, or maybe a rubber thing on the top of a mute?
