Is there a musical reason that the D trumpet part at the end of Ravel's Bolero should be played on A piccolo versus B flat? [If choosing to use the piccolo at all] In trying both combinations, the B flat side seems to be more comfortable.

If you prefer it on the Bb side, play it on the Bb side.

Some people prefer the A/D transposition, some will have a piccolo that responds differently in A or Bb, some prefer the key you end up in - the reasons can be varied - play it on what you prefer.

I just can not think of it as a solo. Everyone in the orchestra is trying to make the loudest, most glorious sound they can wring from their instruments at the moment the D trumpet enters. The D trumpet is merely the icing on the cake. By the way, I like to play it on the D.
