    does anyone recall who played the cornet solo on this columbia recording (nypo) from about 30 yrs. ago?

    David,

    That was William Vacchiano. It is one of the best examples of what I call a "Free Staccato". That is, characteristic shortness without physical tightness. he used to demonstrate it in lessons but he never called it that. That's just my way of describing the staccato he'd use.

    thanks much. i thought he had quit by then. guess i better check up on the 'historical orchestra rosters' i saw somewhere. i have the recording on lp at the office in another town...time for another listen.
