Can a Person Effectively Teach Themselves?

    My definition of an "effective" player: someone who gigs regularly, gets paid for it, and people continue to hire them back. Someone who can get and keep a pro/semi-pro level gig because they play well enough to do so.

    I'm not talking about a top-tier orchestral position, or playing in a top named band, such as Harry Connick Jr's band or Michael Buble's band. That takes a whole different level of talent and training.

    How about someone that gets to play on stage with Till Bronner, and at the end of the session, Till points to that person and says: "You have f...ing amazing chops!" Does that count too?

    Yes it does. These guys (gals) are effectively monster players!

    It's difficult to take yourself beyond a limited and not entirely accurate perspective.

    The easiest person in the world to fool is yourself.
