Christineka, I hope the trumpet you are getting is a Besson 609, which is as I've stated earlier is made by Kanstul in California and IMO is the upper end of student quality if not much better.
If so, the serial number is not on the second valve casing. It is on the downside of the bell at about the area of the valve block.
I think you guys are corrupting me. The $50 trumpet in town is a King 600 that's nice and shiny. I'm going to go see and play it tomorrow. I will probably buy it unless there is something very wrong with it. Seller doesn't play.
King 600 is a decent horn. You won't regret it.
Yes it is. A friend recently bought a used one and I was surprised that it played so well.

I have, I think the 602 cornet, and it's a good little horn.
