I was very fortunate that I have been able to do that, to hear something, pick out what I like and sort of add it to my own style. The earlier a student can do that the better. Not just listen and think “man that is great I wish I could play like that†but to listen and think “ok that is a great player and I am going to figure out how to sound like that" sort of a proactive attitude instead of sitting back and wishing.

Obviously I'm only one opinion, but that fleeting quote is probably the greatest quote I've ever heard in how a student should obtain a great sound. I think the quote is basic common sense, but too often the basic common sense is overlooked for the more tedious solution.

Do I make a slight bit of sense to anyone?

    I agree 100%

I just wish I would have been able to do it in my own playing alot sooner!
