    Keep both cork and felts on pistons out of the water. Felts as become wet (or soaked with oil) compress and then you'll not be able to slot on tones and makes for miserable sounding music. On most instruments you'll also find felt pads outside the piston either around the cap or beneath the key and these are essential also.
