Hope somebody can help. I am in the process of putting together a horn section to play locally (mostly just for the fun of it), and I am starting to research what we have to do to comply with copy-right laws.

I know...I KNOW we have discussed this on TM before. (as I say to my wife frequently...I KNOW it happened...I am NOT crazy!) I tried doing a search on "copyright", but the search did not come up with anything.

Can anybody point me to the right threads??? (Or for that matter, and links that would help?)

    thanks

Most places pay a fee (Cabaree Fee) where they pay the copy right to the two big music owning companies so you dont have to. I would check with the venues.

    Hello,
Copyright laws change depending on where you are located. Copyrights in the U.S are completely different from Mongolian copyrights...they still do the same basic things but with small differences and the laws are very different.

I assume you are in the United States. Technically, you already have a copyright. Copyrights are created the exact instant you have created something and as long as you put " (c) March 2006 _________..." ect, then you really don't have to buy or register one for it to hold up in court. BUt if you DO want to file a register for one then you must go through the basic procedures. Mostly, that involves sending in a copy of your song, the fee(s), and filling out paper work.

I am sorry that I can't spell everything out to you, but I am wiped and am aching to go to sleep, so anyother questions may be answerd here: http://www.copyright.gov/
Oddly enough the site is fairly easy to navigate
    Fees: http://www.copyright.gov/docs/fees.html
    THe basics: http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html

    Hope I helped,

Note360: Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that the venues paid. THAT solves a lot of problems for any group I might get together.

    Thanks again.

    Valvefire:

Thanks for the links. That is kind of what I was looking for. I will check them out. I know that copy-right issues are NOT simple, but I just need some basic information at this point.

Although my immediate concern is the performance of copy-righted music in a live pperformance venue, it is possible that we will try to do some original material at a later date.

    Thanks again!
