There has been a thread that turned up on TPIN about woodshedding jazz. A couple of folks asked me about this guy, and I responded off list. I'll be posting to TPIN later this evening, but in the meantime, I'll post here.

For years the last word in jazz study in the Chicago area was the late Joe Daley. His protoge, Rich Corpolongo, is now carrying the torch.

Richie is an amazing be-bop alto player cut from the Charlie Parker cloth. He has written extensively on the methods of Joe Daley, and, FWIIW coming from me, a mere student of jazz, I'd HIGHLY reccommend Richies Jazz method books in three volumes. Here are a couple of links.

Do me a favor, please, if you contact Rich. Mention that you heard of his site through me. I get no bread or anything. It's just that my admiration for the talent of this man knows no bounds, and I'd like him to know that I'm "trumpeting' his cause, as it were. ;-)

Thanks, and best wishes in all of your jazz efforts, folks.

    Peace.

I couldn't agree with you more. I have been playing some dance band gigs with Rich and have started using his books. His routine is not only great to use in learning improvisation, but they are great for developing chops.
    keep up the good work
