counting question

    Quite often the problem is not the length of the tied note, rather the players that drag because they do not play rhythmically. We can compensate for dragging by turning the 8th into a rest.

    Your director has overstepped his competence. There are plenty of composers that write exactly what they want. What the band leader should have said is "it is common practice to not play the 8th that was tied over".

    I'm surprised he's a trumpet player,they usually just take a stick away from a bad drummer to make a conductor. Some times following a conductor is like being married, just say yes dear and do what your told.
