Thanks guys. Guess I shouldn't have waited so long to ask, although I can see if the local Sam Ash carries the Bremner. Cruise aside, the Silent Brass is a bit steep for me - I do have to pay for the cruise!

My teacher has what looks like the Bremner and she's the one who suggested the air freshener. Is there really $60 worth of difference?

    In a word, yes.

There are others that aren't so expensive. You could also play at the back of the ship, but into something, like a LIFE RAFT, or LIVE VEST. ... for some feedback. Seriously though, a good practice mute is a valuable tool to have and should allow you to get in all the playing you want, even at the dinner table (not necessarily recommending that). I have an extra couple of mutes .... take me along and you can use them.:-)

    Either:

    1) Play the horn full and wide open on the Ledo Deck, with case open (to receive thank you tips)

    OR:

    2) Leave the horn at home, take the mouthpiece ONLY stuff it in a towel, and play where ever you damn well please

I think the backpressure (From my experience with the silent brass with vs. without headphones, ymmv) comes a lot from the decreased feedback from playing with a practice mute. I used to complain about the backpressure on my silent brass until I started using it with good headphones, then I discovered it wasn't so bad (now its just heavy :p)

Ok, I'll be the contrarian here. Ditch the trumpet and be with your wife. Unless you've got gigs lined up for the day after you come back (which I'm guessing you don't, since you emphasized being a trumpet player not a musician) just devote yourself to your wife. Are your chops really that fragile that somehow you'll be set way way back because of a week of no practice? I doubt it. And even if they were, you're wife has given you 20 years! Having to lose a couple weeks on trumpet is a small price to pay. On the other hand, if she's ASKING you to bring your trumpet...well buddy you've got other problems for another forum ;)

You can buy the mute separate from the other unit.

And I was getting ready to post the next comment but I see the above poster beat me to it. Anyway, why not -

I think on this cruise with your wife, you can find other things to be doing with your embouchure. ;-)

Seriously, I am with the other guys ... let it go for a week.
Relax... go to that happy place ... and when you come back think about it while you play.

Try conning your way into playing with the dance group in the evenings (if they still do such things). I did years ago on a Carribean Cruise . . . had a blast and kept my chops cooking for the 5 days or so.

I would get a real practice mute. I have the Bremner and I used it with a crappy pocket trumpet last summer. No one complained. And for those that say leave the horn home and be with your wife, do what I did. Wait until she's taking her shower and doing her doo! That's what I did. I do, however, have a very supportive girl friend. Good luck!

Or just find a time during the day when people are likely to be gone from their rooms sight seeing, doing whatever and then play without a mute ... of course the other thought is that you are on a vacation and take some time to relax or take the mouthpiece and do lip buzzing or play songs with the mouthpiece only.
