I am currently plaing the musical "The Sound of Music." There is a marking to use a 1/2 open cup mute several places in the part. Can anyone explain how this is accomplished.

    Thanks!

I've always just held the cup loosely in the bell when "open cup" is specified.

Another idea might be if you have a movable cup to leave the cup extended out.

I have a follow up to this thread, anybody know what a sweet mute is? One of the substitution pieces I just got (5 minutes ago) calls for a "Sweet mute"

    Any thoughts...

A half-open cup mute is a mute with close friends & acquaintances that all pretty much know, but still hasn't worked up the courage to formally tell its family.

    That's good, really good.

I take it to mean the mute is held in the bell with the hand since the mute is barely in the horn.

Hello,Take a look at the Soulo Mute that is advertised on the Trumpet Herald. The mute has clips that fit the mute to the Bell. Can be adjusted to open and back to closed without having to remove the mute etc.

Listen to Demo DVD to see if the mute sound of this brand Trumpet mute is what you prefer. Good luck
