    Hello Ladies and Gents -

This is my first post and I admit that I am not a huge computer guy. At any rate, I used to play trumpet several years ago in middle school and have now decided to pick it back up again. At that time, I did not even know what I was even playing. My father purchased one for me at a pawn shop used. However, I vaguely remember it not being the best... but was still grateful. Now that I am older I want to make sure that I get a good horn to start again with. This leads me to my dilema (or maybe not depending on what the general consensus is?). I recently found a pre-UMI King Silver Flair Trumpet (c. 1968-69, SN 452xxx) in pretty good condition. I have heard great things about this horn and how it plays. So I was on my way to purchase it when I happen to stumble across a Bach Strad 43 (c. 2005-6, SN 634xxx). It is in good shape as well except for some small ding on the bell. (By the way the King has somewhat less dings/scratches). Now for price... I am getting both for a good price. The King... approx. 400 and the Bach approx 500. I just wanted to know thoughts from those that I have played with each or have an extremely good knowledge about the horns compared to each other. I know that the ultimate decision will be mine... but given me being such a novice, I would gladly appreciate any and all input. I know that the Bach strad is clearly a superior horn but I'm just not sure about how a newer one will compare to an older/vintage King Flair. Thank you so very much in advance and look forward to your help.

If this turns out to be a landslide... than forgive me (then i did not research on TM as I should have done) but what I have found thus far have been mixed at best and nothting that truly gives a head-to-head comparison.

    Well... Cheers and thanks again!!!!

I know right.... I was tempted to buy both (still considering)... However, which do you think would be a better buy given the information presented. Thanks!

I have a 37 Strad and it's okay. The 43 is the "lead/screamer" bell. The King is the better "lead" horn IMO. My teacher had one and regrets to this day getting rid of it. That says a lot since he plays a Getzen LB Eterna!!!

I play my '66 Flair in a big band, and many is the time that I have determined to move on to something else (most likely a Bach 43*). However, I have never been able to pull the trigger (pun intended) and get something else. It really has everything I want in a big band horn; lightweight, big sound, light and fast valves and fun to play. Maybe some day I will get the 43* (mainly because most of my other horns are Bach) but I don't think it will ever replace my Flair!

GET BOTH, AND BE QUICK ABOUT IT! Seriously - with those prices, you can't go wrong. And some time in the future you can decide which horn you like better and sell the other at a profit (that is if you haven't by then caught N+1).

If I had to pick only one, I'd take the Bach in a heartbeat.

First let me say, WELCOME to TM...

....and clearly as a novice, you will find, we here on TM only use the term utimate. Please make a note of that.

But to the main point: Clearly... pick BOTH... as again, you will find that as TM members... a REAL member, has an N + 1 addiction. No time like that present to admit that you have the same addiction like the rest of us here on TM...

With that said, I would lean toward the Bach. But it doesn't really matter... you will eventually own both!

AND remember Vienna is in Austria, not Australia. It really tics our Australian members off when we try to give them cities that do not belong to them. Sorry Mates!
