You are working muscles never worked on before.
Take a break and make sure to stay hydrated.
I've never done this exercise before because I've been told
that it's not worth it and that you should just practice.
So I can really pass judgement on this.
But what I can say is to give yourself a break.
And then cut back on your workout routine.

Doing the pencil exercise for such short durations will not cause this. Pain in the TMJ (Temporal Mandibular Joint) is usually caused by clenching due to tension. Do you grind your teeth while you sleep? Stress at work etc. will contribute to this kind of problem and the pencil exercise likely just aggravated a preexisting condition.

I am not a doctor and this is not a diagnosis, just some possibilities to consider.

If it is the TMJ I doubt it will clear off in a day or two, if it persists see your doctor.

    All the best!

FIVE TIMES A DAY!!!! Quit it!
Listen to the post about TMJ.......have your dentist check you out.

You are supposed to start the pencil exercise with a 3 1/2 inch long pencil.
You are supposed to practice the pencil exercise five times a week.
You do this with your jaw closed completely.

If you are playing often enough, you don't do it at all.

Let's slow down here a bit!
It is true that our bodies give us signals about what is going on. I am even sure that the pencil exercize and the pain may be related, but not perhaps the way we think.

I use the pencil any time that I can't practice enough. Like most internet advice, there is no checks and balances for DIY training.

I believe the problem is not directly the pencil, rather the inability to relax afterwards. Body (mis)use is most likely the culprit here. My recommendation ist to take a week off. Then perhaps 1 minute/day for the next week or 2, after that 2 minutes a day for 2 weeks, then 3, 4 and finally 5. Give the body an opportunity to regenerate and build habits slowly. Brute force always comes back to haunt us!

Yes! I have to agree with Rowuk on this one. Take a week of now! you have abused your embouchure muscles waaaay to much and gotten stiffer and stiffer without the ability to relax the chops. When starting again go SLOWLY.

You hold it in your lips pointing out to strengthen your lip muscles.

Go to the search button and type in pencil or in google type Eric Bolvin and pencil. He has a YouTube entry showing how this works.
