Is there a reason why the fatter trumpet players tend to be the ones that make up the screamer section of the professional realm? Or is it just a coincidence?

Patrick Hession lead for Maynard, about 5'6 maybe 170

Mike Williams lead for Basie, about 5'7' maybe 170

Doc Severinsen lead period, about 5'5" maybe 150

Tony Kadleck lead NY session guy about 5'5' maybe 140

My teacher Chuck Peterson, Tommy Dorsey screamer about 5'4" about 150

All small guys that scream...and in tune with power.

    Wayne Bergeron is not fat,

I would say "it's just a coincidence" but I could swear I remember reading a similar thread about this that talked about lots of deep breathing stimulating growth hormones or something like that. So for athletes it just means bigger muscles, etc, but for trumpet players who don't get as much exercise...

It could be a bunch of baloney, or I could have just imagined it. But I'm pretty sure I remember a similar topic popping up sometime maybe a year or two ago.

I understand that there are a lot of not-so-fat guys that scream, but I also just get the feeling that a lot of fat players tend to be the screamer types. Maybe it's just because at my school the fat people tend to play pretty high, but whatever. I was just throwing it out there to see if anyone noticed anything similar. I guess not.

    P.S. Wayne is pretty fat

All through Maynard's career he was pretty well in shape.

I think you seem to have a problem with fat people.

    Wayne is FAT????

Lol no- no problem with fat people. Actually, Wayne came to our school, and when our band director gave him a shirt as a parting gift, Wayne asked, "what size is that?" and our director says, "small- something to work towards." It was actually XL, but you are right- he hasn't always been fat, and he's been screaming for quite a while now. He told us that a lot of that had to do with the fact that he started off as a french horn player- apparently something about playing french horn helped him with his range early on. I wasn't really talking about Wayne initially as one of the fat people- I think he is somewhat of a special case, but since you mentioned him...
Anyway, no worries man. I just thought I saw a pattern. Like I said, I guess no one else does.

Pete- I missed your post. That's pretty interesting or maybe it's just baloney like you said. Hopefully someone else has some more insight into that subject.

Steve- I think that might be what's happening.
