    lol, I had the opposite problem. I had lessons for a few years in high school and then pretty much played on my own around the house. I'd play by ear anything on CDs, radio, TV commercials... after 10 years a friend got me involved in a community band. Now I had to play what was written, not what I thought I should play based on playing by ear. On pieces of music I wasn't familiar with it was no problem, Christmas music, was hard to play what the arranger had in mind, not what I thought should be there.

    the more you play by ear the easier it becomes. My private teacher I had while in hig school would give the the name of a popular song and the key I needed to know it in by the next week's lesson. This was a lot of fun to try to figure out and got easier the more I did it.
