Who is your favorite non trumpet playing jazz musician?

I'm exploring jazz and building a CD collection, but I don't want to just follow trumpet players. In a proper exploration of jazz, who is not to be missed?

Billie Holiday is the first answer, she belongs to the greatest ever. But for orientating:

Paul Desmond (try First place agaian with Jim Hall) and Cannonball Adderley as altsaxofonists,
Stan Getz for the tenor as well as some Coltrane and Rollins stuff, and Gerry Mulligan for the bariton.
Ahmad Jamal as a pianist (I prefer the trio's without guitar), also some Art Tatum and the early Bud Powell.
    And a lot of Ellington.

The list needs some drummers : Sidney Catlett, Jo Jones, Kenny Clarke, Max Roach, Danny Richmond, ... And some bassists : Jimmy Blanton, Ray Brown, Charles Mingus, ...

Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Duke Ellington for starters...

Oh ! Yeah ! My passion for the "Great Black Music" began when I was 9, and I'm now 66 : I could mention hundreds and hundreds of names as my favorite jazzmen/women. So I'll stop here...

Max Roach or Tony Williams - it all starts with the foundation.
