Manny, what concerti should an orchestral trumpeter be prepared to perform other than the Haydn and Hummel? Which ones have you performed so far? Does the conductor request for concerti performances from various members on a regular basis? Who gets to decide the concerto that is to be performed?

I am not Manny but see two aspects on your question. Concerti appearing for on orchestral auditions, which you sould be prepared to play if you want to get an orchestral job and pieces which you may be required as soloist wether with your "home" orchestra or others...
    1. There is few pieces who are appearing on orchestral auditions quite often, at least in Europe...Manny, you can add to this if there is some other pieces required for US orchestral auditions

    These are:
    A. Honegger: Intrada for trumpet and piano
    G. Enescu: Legend for trumpet and piano
    A. Jolivet: Concertino for Trumpet, Piano and Strings
    H. Tomasi: Concerto for trumpet and orchestra
    P. Hindemith: Sonata for trumpet and piano - this is appearing rather on german orchestras auditions.

In Bulgaria (where I live) you would be ussualy required to play O. Bohme concerto for trumpet in F minor.

Some orchestra are just requiring a free choice modern/contemporary piece for C trumpet. In this case you can probably take one of the above.

I think that I have seen once the
Toru Takemitsu's Paths for solo trumpet but this is rather rare.

As far as the soloist engagments are concerned, my experience is that most probably the conductor will ask you about the piece before putting it on the program...unless you are one of these guys like David Guerrier or Hakan Hardenberger who are supposed to play anything in the trumpet repertoire and beyond.
    Manny?

Handels' Messiah would be a Concerto for 2 trumpets with orchestra and choir accompaniment!

If you were asked to play a concerto and you didn't feel it was a good one for you, would you be able to suggest an alternative, or is it basically just the choice of the MD?
Would you consider passing it down the section if you felt that one of the other guys would do a better job on that specific piece?

Reason for enquiry - I was chatting to a top London player many years ago and she had been asked to play Brandenburg - she just said no, it wasn't the sort of piece she felt she would do justice to so she passed it on to someone who was more of a specialist in that style.

    Tmike,

At this point in my life my ego's way too big to ever admit to my music director that I wasn't up for an idea he came up with! How's that for an honest answer?

Seriously, I'd likely go along with whatever he wanted me to do because tough challenges are good for us even if one feels timorous about it.

Nothing beats a bit of honesty about one's own playing - I wasn't trying to infer that there were any pieces that you couldn't play, I was just interested in whether the situation might ever arise.

I guess the next question is for everyone else - what would we like to hear Manny play?
And who do we write to in order to campaign for that piece?

How about the Zimmerman Trumpet concerto "Nobody knows..." Let make him sweat ROFL though I would be glad to hear also something like Arutunian or Pakhmutova featuring Manny as soloist, but Minessota appears to be a bit far away from Bulgaria....

That's very funny that you mentioned that, Nick! A few years ago, Michael Steinberg, a musicologist/critic/published author guy who happens to be married to our concertmaster, gave me a tape of that piece and was very eager to have me play it. He wanted to push it with our then music director but nothing ever materialized. Wow, what a piece!

To my knowledge, no-one has recorded the Gunther Schuller concerto. I hear it is a good piece, but incredibly hard. Anyone fancy a challenge?
