I survived my first performance in over 25 years last night. It was with a charity big band here in Cincy. I got through most of it without a problem. Most of it was sight reading, which is still a work in progress. I don't quite understand why we can't practice the charts we actually want to play.

Anyway, toward the end of the first set they pull up Bye Bye Blackbird which, surprise, has a solo for each trumpet part. Did I mention that my sight reading sucks. So, 3 trumpets had solos and I had 8 measures of dead space. Terrible!

Always just fall back to the basic melody. Just keep tone and play as smooth as you can.

But in any case congrats on your first performance - it gets easier from there. (ha ha)

Well done Mark - its sounds like something that you'll want to do again though. My sight reading is a work in progress too, so don't worry about it.

Seems to me that you played 95% of it perfectly, so forget about the odd slight jazz style deviations from the score.
