Fourth valve on trumpets.

    I notice that some piccolo trumpets have a fourth valve. Can anyone help me with its function? How much does it lower the tone of the instrument? Is is peculiar to piccolo trumpets?

    It lowers the horn by a fourth (same as 1&3), allowing for more alternate fingerings for better intonation or extending the range of the horn down (very useful when playing baroque pieces)

    When you are reading D trumpet part on a picc in A the written low C for the D becomes a low F on the picc. 1 & 4.
