Can anyone recommend a source for reasonably priced "playing" gloves -and what material would you recommend? I have always had a terrible time maintaining the finish on horns. One touch and silverplate or lacquer is gone, and raw brass turns within minutes of touching.

I have recently acquired a vintage 46 Olds Super in raw brass. Today I bought another gold plated vintage Super (53). I would like to find a way of handling the horns and was thinking white gloves might work. I did order a cheap pair of cotton gloves advertised for coin handling-but they were so thin that you could see your skin through them-they went straight into the garbage.

I'm sure others have the same problem. Still, now that I have begun a vintage collection for playing and collecting, I would appreciate ideas you might have.

    Thanks in advance,

    Steve

Try doing a Google search for "handbell gloves" or "microfiber gloves."

I knew a fellow who instead of gloves, gripped the horn with a cloth, looks much less silly and won't put you in danger of being confused with a handbell player :)

I don't deliberately emulate Satchmo...but I always use a handkerchief to keep my hands off the metal, for much of your reason(s).

I have a neoprene valve-guard, which protects the finish on the valve casing.

I use a 100% cotton 12x12in. cloth on my trumpet. It works fine for me...

    Just my two cents though!

I practice in all cotton gloves which I purchase quite cheaply from KMart here in Sydney. But all other wiping, handling, polishing, is done using a microfibre cloth - KMart also has these in a three pack - giving me one for each trumpet case.

I preffer valve guards, as I found very unconfortable to wear gloves.
Anyway, I will try some of prior tips. Things change and last time I tried I was 13 or 14y/o...
