Cuba must have been quite an experience.
Yeah. It was great. I was there during the week leading up to their 50 th anniversary of the revolution. The streets were packed and every restaurant and street corner had live music every night. As soon as they saw the trumpet case they hauled me on stage to play. - I was somewhat obliged to also buy their cd afterwards... But I have a cool collection of Cuban music plus the experience of having learned and played it with them!
The most interesting was with a band from Guantanamo. Instead of a string bass they use an oversized kalimba(thumb piano) with only about six tines attached to a wooden box (approx. 2'x3'x1). Awesome.
The player must have had huge thumbs.
I can't believe no one has picked up on that particular requirement. Gees, talk to a walrus. Meooooooow!
