Please don't misunderstand me. I don't run an "elite" shop. I see all kinds - from top professionals, through college trumpet majors, all the way to little Johnny in his first year. I try to help the parents over their fears, not the least that they will be ripped off by the repairer! We all hear "but the teacher said it just needs ......" It is little Johnny who is at most risk, either from a sub-standard instrument or other factors. He is the guy that I especially try to encourage.

Don't dis corporations too much. They are the lifeblood of the arts in this country. Almost all professional orchestras rely on generous donations from corporations to survive.

Nice of mchs3d to balance the discussion. Of course, no one is defending any specific actions, and I share some of the concerns people brought up.

Going back to the OP (that's me :-)), I started the thread because of the significance of GC and it's subsidiaries, including the local Music and Arts that is just a couple blocks away. I hope they do well.

And I think Ivan and others provided some excellent insight about smaller shops.

I also started the thread because I was looking for a venue to laugh about The Onion article. But no one took the bait. :-(

You neglected the Lycanthropes, Coprophagii, Urolagniacs and Pezzonovanti.
