It's Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five on the Red Hot Jazz Archive site – scroll down to West End Blues. (There are quite a few other goodies on that page as well!)

Go back to the main page for links to other pre-WWII material.

Ragtime is considered one of the elements of the start of early jazz.Look up Jelleyroll Morton and Scott JOPLIN,great ragtime composers as well as players. Also check out James P. johnson,he created stride piano which incororates the blues with ragtime. Some early trumpeters were King Oliver Bix Beiderbeke and of course the great Louis armstrong.

The baroque organists were great improvisors: JS Bach, Buxtehude (sp?)

Your scope is awfully wide, as you research you might want to narrow it down some. Follow your interest.
