Of the yamahas - a 6335, 8335, or 8335RGS is a pretty "middle of the road" good pro horn. (used, the 6335 is the best value - people forget about them :-))
For a bach, probably want either a 37 or a 72. (for what its worth, I've never played a 37-style belled horn I liked, but that's just me).

gglassmeyer is right on with recommendations. Go with silver pating. On the bach, the 37 bell is by far the most common. All 3 of mine (and one Kanstul clone) are 37s. If you see a 43 bell, it is also very popular. Slightly brighter sound. You will want a ML bore on either (the standard).

Obviously, I'd recommend a Bach over Yamaha, but there are others who would say the reverse. See what most of the other top players have. Bet it is one or the other.

Thanks for the addition information. I guess the next step is to take my son to a shop that has a large inventory of different trumpets and try out the Strad and Yamaha along with a few of the other models.
    Thanks, Dana
