Help with Shakes...

    thank you all, this all makes a lot of sense...
    i have the Schlossberg book, will look for those exercises, and will give the Colin book a go

    the schlossberg exercises are in a different book from the one most people have, but they are pretty simple (not easy...simple) and really just an extension of arbans. if you can't find them, it just starting on G on top of the staff, fingered 1 and 3, trilling to A. quarters, eigths, triplets, 16ths, 32nds, etc. then up to Ab/Bb.

    Shakes are not just lip slurs, especialy in a section. They have different intervals, spacing, etc.
    The U. S. Army Jazz Amb's have a good educational video available called "Inside The Big Band" discusing how to make a band swing, covering all the sections. Examples of how to do Shakes Drops Glisses etc. are included when they get to the trumpet section.
    It is over 1 hour long and an interesting tool for all.
