In the short time I have been here on TM, I have already seen enough "I have big fat lips and so-and-so told me I can never be a good trumpet player because of it" threads to make me wonder if the search function actually works here...

Anyway, I was wondering have any of you thin lip types ever been told to hang up the trumpet cuz your lips are just too damn skinny? Or that with your lips you'd make a great French Horn player?

I have never heard any such tales of whoa.

    Just curious

Fleshy lips a kind of trendy....for a girl like Angelina Jolie (to get noticed a girl must have some other fleshy body parts though :-P):

I have pretty big lips, and I'm not that bad....
on all the sides of the mouthpiece I can see the dark red lip tissue when playing in front of the mirror. I might get 'tired' faster and have some more trouble with high notes, but That doesn't mean I can't be a good trumpet player. It'll just take a little longer.

    no idea about thin lips....
maybe some lip workouts to generate some more muscle tissue?

    Dutch,

Seems like you missed the point. Fleshy or thin, it shouldn't affect your playing. I have seen world class players with either fleshy or thin lips. Doesn't matter.

I've got nothing to compare my lips with, so we'll probably never know if it actually makes a difference :D
either way, I'm not complaining about it.

Yes, it's my lips why I can't play, ya, that's the ticket.

I think I'm becoming too cynical lately

Trumpetnick is right. I thought it mattered looking at M.A.'s lips but then I got a Hardenberger album with a pic from when he was young and noticed his lips were way fuller than mine. And that album was of Telemann concertos on the picc. Then there is Louis Armstrong and Clifford Brown and Lee Morgan and Roy Hargrove and Jon Faddis etc etc.
I believe there are no lips out there that will defeat persistent, well guided and abundant practice.
