I have seen some real head scratchers on eBay. Horns that make me say "WHY?"

I also have found some great deals there. I bought a Courtois large bore horn (Balanced model) that played like a dream. The poster said that it needed some valve work and was banged up. I bid with a max of 150 and got it for under 125. Imagine my surprise when the "valve work" was to re-assemble the first valve piston and lubricate the valves. The valves worked great, I freed the slides, and for under 150 I had a great trumpet. I subsequently traded it in on a Recording. I like the Recording, but I miss that Courtois like you wouldn't believe.

Instead of hijacking this thread, maybe we could start a "How to Buy" thread instead.

Lou, I'm confused as to how they did this. The lead pipe now goes into where the bell used to come out? The bell comes out where the lead pipe went in?

Nope, the old Directors were "backwards" cornets - the mouthpipe goes into the 1st valve and the bell comes out of the 3rd valve. Same way with the 1960's 76A Connquest and 5A Victor, but all 3 had different leadpipe arrangements.

Top to bottom: Director, Connquest, Victor

Here's the other side of the Director...

That's just an old marching bugle. I'm going to bed now, too...;-)
