Is that a bullet hole in the hat?
Why are they shooting at you?
Are they a bad shot or did you duck just in time?
Did the hat come off when the bullet hit?

    Yep. It's Mendez.
Mendez had many hobbies and one was restoring Model A Fords. He would take considerable time to get them back to new and would give them to friends as gifts. One such close friend was John Wayne, who received a Model A from Mendez.
This info came from an unimpeachable source, Prof. David Hickman.

    Thanks Rich,

Did you know Rafael? Meet him? Play with him?

No, I never met him and like many others, I can only imagine what it would be like to play like him.
Manny, you and I are around the same age (I have about 4 or 5 years on you) and I wonder when you first heard the great Mendez?

    Rich,

I first heard Mendez when I was in 8th grade and it was on recording. The record was The Magnificent Sound of Rafael Mendez. I wore out the groove as it was a revelation to me. Never got to hear him live nor meet him. That's one of the great regrets of my career that I couldn't tell him how much his playing meant to me and what an inspiration he was.
