I know how to hold a rotary trumpet with the 1st slide heading east when holding.
but how about those horns with a heckel style 1st slide with the slide corresponding with the lead pipe?

There are no hard and fast rules as how to hold except in both hands with the little end to your mouth. What ever way is comfortable for you in a relaxed manner.

    Regards, Stuart.

As Stumac says, you don't need to be a genius to work it out, the lips go on the thin bit where the mouthpiece goes in, then just hang on for the ride.
