I'm sure this is a dumb question but, what is this thing

    No wonder I didn't know what to do with it. I would never have thought to use this thing on my valve casing. Thanks for the answers.

    At the trumpet shop I see them use the handle of a wooden mallet with a soft cloth over it to clean valve bores.

    Yes, but it's a soft metal rod, not a hard metal rod.

    That said, it's your horn, and however you want to clean it is your business.

    I think that they are usually aluminum rods and shouldn't damage the valve casing or leadpipe. I use a microfibre rag and a wood dowel for swabbing my leadpipe and valve casing.
