Just wondering... Is Benge pronounced with a hard G (J) sound as in "cringe" or with a soft G as in "ping"?

I've never pronounced it with an 'i' sound - am I wrong? I have always pronounced it "benj", like Benji without the 'i'.

Dude, I'm from Texas... Benj and Binj both come out as 'beeunnj'... but at least I know know it's not 'beeanng' like beeanng Crosby :)

Thanks guys. You'll keep me from sound like just that much more of a newbie... although I'll still sound like a Texan

    Last time I looked, a hard 'g' was as in 'good'. (Sorry, I'm a teacher :-) ).

Benge has a soft g sound - 'Benj' is correct.

My father, who knew Mr. Benge, told me he pronounced it to him in the German way...

Ben-ge as in Por-she two separate syllables. Ben geh with a hard G on the geh.

    But is it important?

So it's BenGay like the ointment

And no, it's not important... I had been pronouncing it like 'Bing' Crosby and the local horn shop guys were talking about 'Benj' so I was just curious. Next time I'm there I'll ask David if I can play that 'BenGay' trumpet and see how he reacts :D

    Not Ben Gay

Geh as in...I don't know how to tell you.

    Por-she as in chef

Ben-ge with the same sound. :?:

I got it... I think there's actually a name for it; 'shwa' or something. But BenGay is funnier...

    :bleah:
