    Wow. What a loss - I hope that somewhere along the way he recorded his memoirs about his time and place in the big band era. That would be a cool autobiography to read. His resume was the who's who of the big band world - Kenton, Woody Herman, Henry Mancini, Sinatra - pretty much all of the major bands and artists of the time.

    John was my best teacher ever-I studied with him right our of high school and stayed for a few years. I owe him my career-what a great trumpet player, teacher AND most importantly a wonderful human being. He not only helped me with range, but also improvisation too.

    His cats were always sleeping on top of the stove because they liked the heat from the pilot light.
    Plus he taught me how to roast garlic :)
