    Hey everyone,

I wanted to pick everyone's brain a little. I am trying to find some trumpet trio music that is good enough to perform. I've dug around and it seems that most everything I find is geared more at the younger solo and ensemble market rather than at us old folks... I'd prefer some pieces that are for 3 trumpets with no accomp. and that are still in print and available. Do these really exist? Can anyone help me out on this one?

    thanks in advance,

    Joe

I don't know of any advanced trios with out accompinment. But there are some quite nice ones with piano out there. The Mendez trios are pretty good and can be hard but they can be performed and audiences will like them. Also don't forget Bugler's Holiday that is a lot of fun to play. I know it is often used as a teaching piece for double tongueing, but try playing it musically with a lot of panache, that is were the challenge is, but if you can do that the the audience will love it

I don't know if these are necessarily good or not, but you can find them listed in a book, entitled, "Sound the Trumpet."

    Trios
    Level 1-2
Fanfare as stated - published by Boosey Hawkes
The Earle of Oxford's March - Byrd/Dishinger - Medichi Music Press
    Six Pieces d'Audition - Defaye - A. Leduc
Echo Waltz - Goldman - Carl Fischer
The Three Stars - Staigers - Carl Fischer
Suite for Three Trumpets - Tomasi - A Leduc

    Level 3-4
Chiapanecas - arr. Mendez - Carl Fischer
The Magic Trumpet - Burke - Carl Fischer
    Whip-Poor-Wills - VanderCook - Rubank

    Level 5-6
    Hail the Conquering Hero - Handel/Milford - A. Leduc
Three Dances - Mattheson/Voxman - Southern Music Co.

That's all that's listed, I hope that helps some.

Also the Trio for Jimmy - It's by Stan Friedman for Jimmy Stamp.... it quotes the Stamp hymn at the very end. Real fun piece and not too hard. Also for something harder and more esoteric... check out the Burrel Phillips Trio.

Rob Roy McGregor has a great arrangement of the Beethoven Trio, op. 87. Really fun to play and all the parts get some nice moments.

It's worth checking out Sofia Gubaidulina's Trio for Three Trumpets, as well as Elliot Carter's Canon for Three. Both are very cool pieces and are recorded on Reinhold Friedrich's cd Modern Trumpet
