Hi, I recently went from a hot country to a very cold country and my lips are pretty sore. :-( It must have caught me by surprise and i wasn't prepared with a suitable enough lip balm. They have a bit of an inner rim - like a red wine stain, tho' it's not!! - which is painful, a feeling of tiny cuts and a little wee cut/ spot inside. I'm practicing through as don't want to stop- any advice ?

I'm not a doctor and this is not medical advice but I have found vitamin C and vitamin E good for getting through cold weather spells when my lips dry out and crack --- e.g. when I've been riding the bike through cold without using lip balm first. If I have a problem split/crack then I usually find I have no option but to rest up from playing for 2-3 days.

Thanks bumblebee. I will try upping the vits - it's probably a good idea in winter in any case! I've been using something called eight hour cream ( Arden ) recently which is hopefully helping, and have ordered something called Lip Calm/ musicians friend - which I saw on this forum and didn't realise could get in London. Maybe it's sometimes better not to practice, perhaps it's a bit of a fantasy you'll lose your embouchure after a day or two!

Vitamin E if you can get it in balm form always works for me.

Lip balm preceeded by application of aloe vera often works. :-)

Have just tried fresh aloe vera followed by lip balm, and previously vit e oil. Will look for carmex. Honestly, somethings got to work!

I break open those gel-capsules and smear on the liquid from them.

Katie-did -- are you getting enough sleep? I hear that sleep improves skin tone/health.

Carmex has wool fat in it, so make sure you're not allergic. Also, don't use it before you play. It'll make your valves stick.

The best hydration comes from within. Drink plenty of water (even if you aren't thirsty) and that should help.
