How does the difference in length between the two cornet shank types effect backbores and the playing and tone characteristics of each?

Does the difference in length change backbore requirements in the individual mouthpiece?

Is one type more oriented towards a certian sound characteristic than the other? ie Traditional Vintage - American Long/Dixieland - European Shepard's Crook/British Brassband.
