Long Tones

    How long exactly is a "long tone" and through what range(s) would you do them for building up endurance/chops?

    A long tone is one full breath exhausted until it hurts.

    I advocate playing them softly in the range that you musically have command of. For most players that is MAX low F# to high C above the staff. Long tones are only one tool. There is much more needed for endurance and range.

    Go up half-steps? Or whole? Back down? (or maybe that depends on how much time I have) What about rests in between each long tone?
