Do you think that some mouthpieces just work really well with a horn?

I have a friend that plays an Olds Recording and he uses a Schilke 14a4a with it. He swears by this combo, so I suggest it to one of my friends that plays a recording today. I had a nice Schilke 14a4a and I gave it to him for his 6a4a. He keeps emailing me telling me how good of a combo it is.

My Yamaha matches with my MF III and my new 6a4a a lot, great sound and great combo.

Do any of you think that some mouthpieces work with other horns this well? I am interested to hear if you have found a mouthpiece that works great with your horn.

I use a Schilke 14a4a in all my Olds horns....... Your results may vary, don't use if you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant or if you are taking any psychedelics or cannabis products. May cause panic, higher notes, gall bladder distress, bloating, gastro intensive distress, lack of "boogaloo" and other high stress consequences....

Actually, a Bach 3C works fabulous with Olds horns. And, you CAN use it if you are pregnant, though I wouldn't advise with the psychedelics.

My Recording loves both of the Schilke mouthpieces I have ... likes somewhat other mps .... and is somewhat indifferent to my Prana B2S3. Part of the personality of the horn, I guess. :dontknow:

Spoken like a true physician, and if you are not one at this time, I bequeath upon you the art of the practice of medicine. (I well demonstrate the secret hand shake the next we meet). And to be a fine physician, always remember and never forget...
Air goes in and out; blood goes round and round. THAT'S ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW!!

Seriously.... I too use the Schilke 14a4a to make my Olds RecordingS ring the brightest and sound the truest. It is THE most impressive mouthpiece on this particular horn.

With that said, my Martin Committee LOVES Olds mouthpieces. It plays the darkest with the Olds 3, but the Olds 7 is close. The newer mouthpieces donot come close. Now if you want the Committee to scream like Dizzy... It's the vintage Jettone Studio B all the way... Just make sure no audience member is in direct line of the horn when so using... Brain matter on the opposite wall is a nasty sight.

My Benge 4SC works [as in "sounds", "feels"] well with my Yamaha 6310Z and King 1117SP, but it is less effective [tone and playing-characteristic-wise] with my Getzen 90s and Conn 1000B.

For cornets, the Benge 5½SC plays best with my Yamaha 731, but sounds better with my Conn 15As. Yet again, it doesn't "feel" as good when it is used to play the 15As.
My Bach 5V sounds the best with the Yamaha 731, but it doesn't overly round out the Conn 15A's sound like it does the Yamaha. With the Conn, it takes some "edge" off the sound and makes the horn harder to play. All of this is indicative of how the 15A has more of a default "core" sound that isn't heavily changed by mouthpiece changes. The 731 is the opposite: two different mps, two different sounds.

The latest addition to the stable, 1976 Getzen Eterna Severinsen responds best for me with a Dennis Wick 5x mp, a very solid core with lots of overtones, the trumpet sound I have in my head.

    Regards, Stuart.
