I'm looking for a book to sit on my shelf to be pulled out and flipped through when anyone has some sort of question pertaining to music theory. I don't want a theory course or text book. Any recommendations?

    Look for the "Dummies" version.

    Theoretical Foundations of Music.
    William Duckworth and Edward Brown.
    Hope its still in print.
If not go to your local University and see what they recommend.

For jazz I'd recommend on of Mark Levine's books.

For legitimate stuff...hmmm....I don't know of a 'quick reference' type book....I can't really imagine how you would write one (for jazz or non-jazz) that was a quick reference and went much beyond key sigs, time sigs, etc.
