I am not even American, and the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up, and it brought a tear to my eye. Better than some singers I have heard. More of it IMO. The crowd loved it, so it worked.

    This is an option:

    Go Whitney
Whitney Houston sings the National Anthem -- Star Spangled Banner - YouTube
No Lip sync on that one!

Thanks for the posts. McGuire's style good for that occasion, but preferred Rapa's......much more musical.

This one is one of my favorites (Maybe because the University of Cincinnati Bearcats were playing) I mean it's Arturo guys:

Much smoother I would say... like a Cuban cigar.

If anyone can find Lou Rawls' recorded version please post it... It is the most beautiful version of the National Anthem, with a Piccolo trumpet playing around Lou's vocal. Even Vulgano Brother would be impressed.

Totally? Yeah, it could've been done with more feeling, but, to play with no accompaniment in front of thousands and pretty much nail it? Thats gotta count for something.

Somewhere on youtube or dailymotion you an find a duet version played by Branford Marsalis on soprano and Bruce Hornsby on piano. They have performed this more than once. Very different, Bruce does some very nice reharm and Branford plays beautifully. No histrionics.
    I did like McGuire's version.

I also liked McGuire's version. Not my favorite. But I liked it. I suspect some are reacting to the high level of energy, which maybe overshadowed some of the musicality.
