The other day I received the new biography about Chet Baker called Funny Valentine by Matthew Ruddick. So far so good. Any one read it?

Yes, I've read it. I would say that, along with "Deep in a Dream", one can get a good picture of Chet. I wouldn't rely on this alone. It's more of a chronology of his activities. "Deep in a Dream" is a heavier book. The author of "Valentine" seems to me, for several reasons (i.e. his misuse of "sic"), a bit lightweight. And from the very beginning, he makes some, IMO, pretty shaky assumptions about the psychological reasons for Chet's addiction. He's also a bit loose with the word "prodigy" which is a nuisance to me. I don't have real confidence that this author writes with a great deal of command or authority. However, he's done his homework and the book is very thorough as a chronology and, for me, was quite interesting. It's also a very easy read. Personally, warts and all, I think it's worth a read.
