My last group trumpet lesson of the day, I had three fifth graders new to my school. One student had a King 601, nice student horn, another had a Jupiter Capital edition with the Sterling leadpipe, nice. The third little girl had a Los Angeles Olds Mendez in perfect shape! Her mom wanted to bring that to school because she wanted to keep the "good" trumpet at home! The good home horn is an old Benge Claude Gordon! Made my day!

Hi. I am curious, how does it happen that this kid has such nice horns?

I played in a big band with her grandfather in the 1980's. But last year, I had a student come in with an Olds Opera trombone! One year a 5th grader came in with a Conn 40B Vocabell!

I had a Selmer Radial as my first horn in 6th grade. It can happen :-)

I love teaching! It is never boring. Tedious, maybe, but never boring.

I wish I had horns like that when I was younger!

So it's a family affaire! That makes sense. I imagine that otherwise it would be pretty unlikely that a kid's parents get him such material to cut his chops on...

But then, maybe in the States there are so many nice old instruments scattered around, if you stroll into an instrument shop you might be advised to buy an Olds Mendez. Heck, there was a thread last week, where a guy got a Selmer DeVille Bb horn in a thrift shop -- of course, he knew what he had on his hands when he saw it.

In Andorra, my daghter's teacher had a grandson, wanted to give him the great-grandfather's horn to get him started, a very beautiful old Bach. But the kid only wants to play soccer!

Anyways, Sterling, you sound like you must be a great teacher.

offer them a nice shiny Yamaha 2335 for one of those (the CG Benge preferably, but a good trade for a Mendez too!)

I would trade them a Pinto (hey, you can take it apart and play it too!)!
