I am looking to upgrade from a besson 600. Am thinking of a s/p bach omega, s/h great condition, as new....£550. Any good, or could money be better spent....your thoughts. I am looking for a lightweight model.

    Cheers

Being the resident "Omega Defender", I will tell you that the Omega is a decent horn. Note that word-decent. Yeah, it's served me good up to this point, but now that I'm starting to get in with tighter players, I'm realizing that is holding me back somewhat. Also, if you're looking for light, I don't think this is the horn for you.

Of course, before any real advice can be given, it would be helpful to know what you intend to play (jazz, classical, etc). What is your budget?

Classical mainly....This IS the budget!!!! Other trumpets I have been looking at Blessing ltml1, stromvi debut. I am thinking a better quality s/h trumpet rather than a new trumpet for the funds thst are available........your thoughts.

Wait a minute, that's pounds right? That's coming out to be what, $916.15? Friend, as much as I love my Omega, you can do better than it for that price. If that is a used Omega you're referring to, it'd be a ripoff. I saw a nice Bach Strad with a 72 bell go for about 700 or so last week, and you'd still have 200 dollars for lessons, or shipping, or whatever.

Shoot, now that I think of it, I thought Kanstul had some kinda intermediate horn for that much NEW? Anyone else on here confirm that one?

    Michael is right.

For $900+ dollars you can buy a lot of horn. The exchange rate works in your favor. Of course, if you buy something from the US, you will have to pay VAT. A new K Model trumpet -- one of those horns that is listed as an "intermediate horn" but is really a professional quality horn can be had for EASILY for that kind of $$ including shipping!

    See: http://www.ibowtie.com/kanstulKtmpt.html

There are a couple of other Kanstul horns that could be had for near that price (a little more perhaps) but you would be getting a lot of horn.

Email me if you want details. I don't mind shipping to the UK.

eBay is another option. I have written some guidelines for how to look for instruments on eBay: http://www.ibowtie.com/buyinghints.html

You could find everything from an Omega to Yamaha, to even a used Bach Strad for that price (again, you would have to pay shipping and VAT).

    eBay UK: http://www.ebay.co.uk/

Would allow you to get a horn without big shipping expenses.

For example a Bach Omega for £500

1972 LA Benge Starting at £500
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=16214&item=3757951818

I must admit the selection on eBay.uk is a bit small. But for £550 you can buy a high quality horn new.

    Yee HAW!
Guys, don't forget where hugohorn is posting from. Remember that price structures are entirely different in UK as vs US! (And there is this little thing called "VAT" which stands for "Value added tax" in the amount of 17.5% also.... and shipping is going to run at least $75 US..... and...... and......

"Golly, we aren't in Kansas any longer!"

The VAT is the killer. Shipping, believe it or not, can be done fairly reasonable to the UK. But most people with a VAT know they have to pay it on top of everything else.
