Reminds of an incident I witnessed years ago. I was working in a retail music store. Kid brings his bone in and says it plays a little stuffy. Our repair man checks it and finds a dent ball stuck in the slide. And the kid's been playing the horn! made all District band! I never understood how he was able to get a sound out of it.

Had a really bad day at a major music festival about twenty years ago, and ended up ordering a new trumpet. Cleaned my horn the day after and a pencil came out.

Maybe that is the real reason conductors tell us to "play the ink!"

Bleargh. I just gave a double horn a bath, and I have a SECOND double to do.

Cleaning, you guys have it MADE. I have to have a hammer to clean these horns. And yes, before you ask, I'm doing it right.

OTOH, I just scored an original H77 Farkas horn for my birthday. And, there's enough usable pieces out of this Maxtone I should be able to get her 100% straight!

I had the same exact thing but it was the third valve. I couldn't believe what came out in the valve port. About a month later the same thing. I must not have got it all the first time.

Curious, where in the horn was it?

In the bell bend. It was a real short pencil.

maybe that drano comment wasn't so innapropriate... think i might use it on my horn now. and gasoline, pour that through the horn, then light it. if THAT doesn't kill everything, we might as well give up

I like hot water and ammonia mixed. That's what Harry James would have his gofers do to his horns after every gig.
