    Still like Ed's reply...combined with thoughts from fleebat and Bay Area, as you suggested yourself, how about narrowing your survey down to simply: "How many folks are currently employed primarily as musicians or musical teachers/professors?".

    There is no accurate way to get a picture as we are talking about an infinite amount of variables. It really doesn't matter about how others are doing it because if you live in Wyoming and make >$5,000 a year with the trumpet you are one of THE major players, in New York, that amount would only be a serious hobby.

    Nevertheless, curiosity is curiosity. Nobody HAS to answer so there should be no "criticism". The better posts offer perhaps alternatives.

    I thought the question was simple and concise.

    Lots of folks here seem to think "amateur" is a pejorative term and consequently are reacting negatively to the thread title. Just an observation...
